Mazda Shows Off Taiki Concept w/ Next Gen Rotary Engine

Mazda Taiki Concept
Mazda has had some fairly radical concept designs lately, but nothing thus far beats the Taiki concept unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show. This thing is completely unconventional, but Mazda says the concept showcases a possible design direction for future generations of Mazda sports cars. Styling is decidedly organic, keeping in step with other previous Mazda concept vehicles.

A new iteration of the RENESIS rotary engine dubbed the 16X is found in the Taiki’s engine bay. Displacement has been bumped up to 1.6L (800cc x 2) utilizing a twin rotor unit that features a longer stroke then the outgoing version. The 16X is said to be more efficient as well, thanks to a new direct fuel injection system and lightweight aluminum side housing.
