Question: I'm thinking about going to vocational school to pursue a career as an auto mechanic. What is the typical pay for an auto mechanic who is just starting out? What about for an auto mechanic who has a few years of experience?
Answer: There is no typical pay. There is flat rate which is you get paid for the hours the book says it takes to do a specific repair. for ex, the flat rate manual may say it takes 1.0 hr to replace a battery, if you do it in less time, you still get paid a full hour. if it takes 6 hr then you worked 5hr for free. there will be shops that will pay by the hour, but the hourly rate wont usually around$8-10 an hr. Probably will start out as a lube tech, if you can get that much. the object is to know how to not only wrench, but to learn all systems. mechanical, electrical, runability, and hvac. i personally have been a mechanic for over 25yrs., Ive worked with ase master techs,to backyard mechanics.there is alot of truth in the saying, a good mechanic is hard to find.

Question: I have always loved working on cars, but I am not sure if that would be a great career for me. What kind of salary does an automotive mechanic job pay and does it offer health benefits?
Answer: An automotive mechanic can make anywhere between about $25,000 and $60,000 per year, not including overtime bonuses. The type of experience and certification that a person has is a likely determining factor in their salary. For example, a mechanic just out of high school is more likely to be on the lower end of the pay scale than someone with years of experience and an ASE certification. Some mechanic jobs offer health benefits and others do not; it really just depends on the place.
