Question: I have been working for a mechanic for 6 years and decided to go on my own. I am capable of fixing anything on a car. Question: Everyone knows about the importance of oil changes as preventative maintenance. Is there any low-cost maintenance that can be done for automatic transmissions that would help avoid expensive repairs?
Answer: There are several things you can do:
1) don't overload/overwork your transmission. It was designed to do what it does within limits.
2) Don't 'burn' your transmission when trying to get out of a snowbank or mud. Mineral-based fluids 'die' very quickly when overheated, and they DO NOT recover. CHANGE IT.
3) Though transmission cleaning is not normally recommended, when changing fluid, use the AMSOIL product which is noncorrosive and can be disposed of as nonhazardous waste.
4) Use the best fluids. Anything cheaper and of lesser quality will end up costing far more in lost fuel mileage overall, and in eventual premature repairs at greater cost than the best fluid. Use AMSOIL's synthetic fluid for your specific purpose. It is unrivaled. AMSOIL INVENTED synthetics for automotive use and has billions of miles in research and development.
5) Add a transmission cooler (radiator) is you must push the limits. It will be cheaper than a transmission.

Question: My car transmission failed on me this afternoon. Where can I find transmissions that are cheap and for sale?
Answer: Well, first of all, no transmission is going to be cheap. But a place to start would be a local pull it yourself place. You may have to do some major scouting around but when they sell them they almost always guarantee them to work.
