Question: My car has been acting funny lately and I'm trying to narrow down what may be causing the problem. My gut feeling is that it has something to do with the transmission but I'm not sure. Can you tell me what some of the most common signs of auto transmission problems are so I can see if I am on the right track?
Answer: Any of the following MAY (but see your mechanic to be sure) indicate a transmission problem:
1) Erratic shifting
2) 'Thumping' when shifting when it was previously smooth. This may require only an adjustment. Some racing ttransmissions are adjusted this way to get maximum take-off and minimum slip, but it doesn't make for a comfortable street ride. Change your fluid and transmission filter (if it has one) while the tranny is open. Use the best, and use synthetic.
3) Chatter or whirring sounds.
4) Sudden white smoke out the tailpipe. Transmission fluid is being drawn up into the fuel system. This swas common with the older carburator engines.
5) Doesn't shift on an incline, especiall nose-up (probably low fluid level) and you need to determine the cuase NOW as soon as you can service it.
6) You see a red fluid spot under the car after you have been parked (as in the garage where you'll be more likely to notice it).
7) You detect an oily odor with no smoke. It may take a mechanic's meters and experience to determine what is the cause.
