Question: I have received several vehicle repair estimates from local mechanics, but they differ in amount by as much as $1,000 dollars. Is it normal to receive widely differing vehicle repair estimates? Is there typically a difference in quality between the higher estimates and the lower estimates? I want to go with the lowest price, but I am concerned that I may be sacrificing quality work.
Answer: In general dealerships will charge more for maintenance and repairs because they have to pay a certain amount back to their parent company. In non-dealer shops the difference is usually going to be in whether the mechanic is certified to work on your car or not. A non-certified mechanic will typically void any warranty you have on your car parts or on the car itself. You need to ask if the mechanic is certified, etc, before allowing him to service your vehicle. Next insure that each shop is giving a quote for new parts as opposed to refurbished parts. Finally discuss with each shop what service is being provided, some shops may include items that are unrelated to the actual repair such as vehicle inspections or similar checks. Once you have removed unneccesary charges and made sure that all shop quotes are using the same parts then you can pick a shop to do the repair. Your best bet will probably be to go through the dealer as the repairs will be guranteed but it may be far more expensive. I would avoid going to the cut rate shop because there is usually a reason they are not charging as much as everyone else, such as using cheap labor or substandard parts.
